At the beginning of this summer, this sign and building were coming down for redevelopment. Not an impressive sign, Even though rusted and neglected, it worked its whole lifetime. Nothing as vertical will be allowed and the new sign most likely will be a low profile corner piece. Probably less impressive.

loyalty beyond the call. The The Venture Brothers' professional bodyguard protects his chosen patrons, barely bothered by their idiotacy. So a world of Brock's, the equivalent of millions of the bestest big brothers who has and uses a license to kill. The just completed second season was a sensitive left turn.

This concert became a little adventure. The promoters were trying to mimic the El Dorado Natural Amplitheater celebrations that Bogus Slogan put on every few years in the barrens of Nevada. Only Bogus Slogan brings and pays for a small town to be set up to assist the concert goers. But in Poughkeepsie, the band arrived 18 hours into the event and nobody had any clothes on. Sure there was a lot of personal communication going on, but most were into the music.

Both the Men of Hearts and The Butter Flys, were "mTn Storm" bands. Band members would step in and out, but the sound would always be there. Songs did end and start, but their lengths could be in the hours. Any style, any combination could be played. We assumed Bogus Slogan's concert was meant to be a bathroom break. Instead, members of both "support" bands stepped in and out of the Bogus Slogan's songs

The boys in the band caught on pretty quick - started sharing - and a normal 3 hour concert became 15, before someone realized that Bogus Slogan should finish up and get to the next gig.

Expressions: Unbalanced Mess (2004)

Continuing in the "Complete Waste of Fame" watercolor system, Unbalance Mess deconstructs a flight of fancy. Color bleeds, blur a mechanical background that tries to drive through a top coat overlay.

Airy elements hint at feathers, in motion and at rest. A dramatic centerpoint spins out a sputtering ribbon of speed.

There she is. Looky there..across the room; down the bar; dancing at the rave... Unabashed. Willing to take chances. Confident, self-possessed. Round happy curves.

However; that girl is no match for Doctor Girlfriend. No one has hair that black - knows unrestrained evil and can wear, convincingly, a bow-tie bra. And with her monotone basso profundo voice, she can reject your ego without direct comment. Maybe it is better we look for a new squeeze at tonight's Bogus Slogan concert.

Doctor Girlfriend, from the The Venture Brothers, sets the stage for this Bogus Slogan Concert at the famous Green Hotel in Pasadena, California. Support group, The Swinging Rustys, were a Buckingham's tribute band who dressed like Dr. Thaddeus "Rusty" Venture (including bald head and thick framed glasses).

Sunday in the Park in New York, always time for a Bogus Slogan concert. For a few years, the Bryant Park Summer Festival Co-Operative produced a summer full of concerts. Each day brought forth, from the wealth of local talent and, like Bogus Slogan, the occassional group on tour, an unlimited range of musical styles for those coming to or passing by Bryant Park. In order to get city permits, no amplifier could exceed 40 watts and no more than 4 speakers could be used for the public address system. Even with these limitations, the music got out to the People.

The vibrant background image of the poster, "Henchman," is from the Venture Brothers, an homage strange of "Johnny Quest." 1960's television in free fall.

Original Prints of the poster (125 print run) now sell at auction for about $840.00. Also available are approximately 600 "handbills." The Co-Operative left these in coffe shops, restuarants and cafes through out the city. Cheaper paper, cheaper price.

Bogus Slogan Poster #45 - Inside View

From the artistry of Jean-Michel Basquiat; a dog, a man, feet on fire. Just the impetus to get out of the house and into the Chester Randolph Memorial Stage for a Bogus Slogan concert.

This is one of the most popular Bogus Slogan Concert posters. Not only did you get a copy of Basquiat's great art, but since the venue was only in existence nominally for a week, Bogus Slogan never played the "CRMS" again. The Band rented a movie production stage in the old Playtime studios and recorded the first of many similar multi-media events. From which, concert CD, concert DVD, music videos, promotional commercials, etc., were created. In the space of 72 hours, 18 unique revenue streams were invented for the public. When the last production light was faded to black, the entire set was struck, and unique fixtures and props were auctioned off as Band souvenirs.

A small production run of 375, insured the poster's value. Three days after the concert, a popular web site (pre eBay) had an impromptu bidding war. This particular poster had all the Band members signatures from the show. Some super fan parted with $2,100. Here's hoping he or she still has it hanging, because in recent years, auctions of the Basquiat BS poster fetch about $2,650. Profits for all!

Don't stop boppin' - It's only a two bar break.

A great risk in music is listening to a vinyl record through headphones at high volume. One click, one pop and your faith in the human race is ruined. With iPods and Compact Discs, this unprotectable activity has been subduded. Hopefully, none of your MP3s are not from a flawed vinyl recording.

Let's say you like music, really like music. With digital, you can idol worship without regret. Charlie Parker's saxophone (Bird Lives), Eric Clapton's Guitar (Clapton is God). Jimi Hendrix's guitar (Hendrix Forever). You can turn up the stereo and try to space your thoughts among the many notes coming from Bird's horn.

But the real life vinyl risk comes when you crank up the headphones to listen to the outro guitar solos, such as, "Axis, Bold as Love," or "Let it Rain." Long fades. Note after note sliding into silence. Why couldn't Hendrix or Clapton have done this great solo during the middle eight. The ritual of cleaning the vinyl would not resolve the anxiety. You just had to take the pressure to get the reward.

Those who are unhappy with the digital revolution should get out their 1974 Todd vinyl album. Slip on side two - track the last song "Everybody's Going to Heaven/King Kong Reggae" - turn up your headphones and wait for the fade. Rundgren sings about Cadillacs and Chevrolets and the big monkey. It is the longest, smoothest pre-automation fade I have heard. It is so good, you might get caught by the needle pick-up groove at record center.

Caraways - named after the narrator in The Great Gatsby, was the New York, Long Island, dream night club operation of Barney "East Frisco" Gierkes. Gierkes was hoping to combine his passions for 1850's Western Plains design and 1930's art deco trim. His choice for the color background of the wallpaper was a light red.

Located in the famed "village" of Riverhead, Gierkes believed his night club was destined for success. Opening night was well advertised through out the boroughs. When only fifteen people walked through the door ( six left immediately), he was not discouraged. He thought that the business would soon pick up. Two months later, boarded up, Caraways began its dark time.

Eight years later, Janet Whalely, bought the remains, kept all the fixtures, put sawdust on the floor, advertised steak dinners, and closed in eleven months.

Current owner, Blade Ting, came along a dozen years later - moved all the offices and storage into a new second floor, made the ground floor one large dancing area serviced by three bars, including the famous central "Circle Bar" with its spiral staircase - kept the Western Art Deco motif and began to make money. Capacity is 1350, which is sometimes inadvertently exceeded during Bogus Slogan concerts.

Bogus Slogan American Tour 2006
Closing Date

Bring your best music attitude. Bogus Slogan closes their run through America this September 17th. Come to Chrome Valley, California to spend the beginning of Fall without sleep. Hear songs from the Band's beginning days. Unreleased bootleg favorites. And all of the latest hits.

Opening acts Gooey Chunks (of Love); Inside Decay; Part Time Rain will play extended sets. Bogus Slogan is scheduled for the stage at 10pm. Last year, the closing number, "I'm Not Impressed," clocked out at 4:08am. So get your nap in.

The El Dorado Amplitheater is an historic relic of the California gold rush. A natural earth formation, Bogus Slogan will bring in the infrastructure of a small town and uses the open air setting to say farewell to the tour.

Bring your own foods and drinks - On site food services will close at midnight. Bring blankets and warm clothing as temperatures will lower to the 40's.

Bogus Slogan Poster #43 - Inside View

Normally, Bogus Slogan uses the Vertex World Crime League as their concert promoters. The VWCL rarely seeks public recognition - in fact, the harder it is to find them, the better.

When the Crime League is unavailable, the Band is not adverse to using local promoters who are willing to use bonds and escrow accounts to verify the flow of monies. They'll be glad to trust you after proper compensation and all the bills have been paid. Bogus Slogan wants even the little guy who stands the concession in the bathroom to get his minimum wage.

Incomplete and Understated Productions of Laguna Beach, California were two surfers who thought Bogus Slogan were the best band in the world. They were determined to get them to play their home town. The Canon Amplitheatre is at the back of the city. No ocean view, rather, the smell of native California sagebrush is predominant. This was the city's first rock and roll concert since the late 60's and the whole town wanted the event held in a neighboring town.

But with art grants, bonds and maybe some compromising pictures, the boys got their concert, with one proviso - Acoustic only - A warm winter night, a thousand good friends, and the coyotes as backup singers.

Here's to our music heroes, Charlie Parker (Bird Lives), Eric Clapton (Clapton is God), Jimi Hendrix (Hendrix Forever), Duke Ellington (Nothing but the Duke)... They make the prettiest graffiti.

Photos: SP "Bull Ring" Rail Yard • Los Angeles, CA

In the early 1990's, I spent a few months photographing the final train movements on the ATSF Pasadena Subdivision. The route was a secondary line from San Bernadino into Los Angeles. Because it ran at grade level through fully developed land, running the line became more and more difficult. Speeds through Highland Park were down to 20 mph. It is now an electric line for passenger light rail (Pacific Electric revisited).

One of my favorite locations was the N. Broadway bridge which overlooked the LA river rail bridge. When no trains were coming, I looked around for other interesting shots. The above photo is of the Southern Pacific "Bull Ring" rail yard. The rail yard was the first to serve the incoming railroads. In the background is downtown LA. The building with the spire, all by itself on the left, is City Hall. Some day this area will be filled in. An NFL stadium has been suggested.

Since everyone has a dream of being rich and famous and popular and desired and... well, insert everbody's want list here. If you can make it in New York or Los Angeles, you can... well, now you can make it from anywhere, but keeping it... well...

But where else can you find the Whiskey-a-Go-Go? Only in beloved Hollywood(land). The home of all dreams. Most people have to come here to begin. Bogus Slogan started from the motherland. All five members grew up in between the oil wells, orange groves and bean fields; listening to the white interpretations of black R&B, backtracking to the originals and then succumbing to the inevitable Beatles.

Yet Southern California had surf and sand. All year long, every year. Add cars and girls, maybe that's why Cali is the home of all dreams.

From the poster, take Vine Street North, to the Hollywood foothills, turn left on Sunset Boulevard, cruise about 2 miles, park and pay the admission fee - Bogus Slogan is playing two shows nightly, Thursday June 20 thru Saturday the 22nd. Get there early, don't miss the opening act, The Topless Vixens. Oh yeah...

Bogus Slogan looks forward to playing the 'Big Easy.' Nearly every American tour of the Band includes a stop in the greater New Orleans area. The 2006 concert tour played a small club bar, Pale's Cosmopolitan, in the downtown district.

The Original Music Hall concert was a SRO BYOB bruiser. 750 people in a 475 space. No one got out alive.

Putting texture onto a two dimentional canvas means the surface needs to be prepared with the peaks and valleys of a neutral base coat. Layer one shows this result.

Layer two brings the first groupings of color. Soft blues recall a morning sky or possibly the gingham dress of a young child. Layer three refines the color alignments, raising the composition toward its last level.

As completed, Homemade Crumble uses red as a defining marker - Letting the viewer sense the floating nature of color over color.

SysOps Notice 2006.08.01

If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet

People always ask me what are my musical influences are. Where do I come up with all those wacky songs. Do I really hear those sounds in my head. These are not stupid questions. I ask them myself. I could print a list of my music collection, but since nearly everything I have is a commercial release, it is not like I have a private source of inspiration.

For the impatient out there, start with " I Feel Fine" (the Beatles) (1964). Obviously, nearly everything they released is a classic - but try to imagine hearing them in real time - comparable to following the career of a current favorite band of yours. But in that era, there is no advance information or leaked mp3s on music blogs. It is just one day a real disc jockey says he has the new single from the Beatles.

I'll keep the analysis short, but... I am mesmerized by Ringo Starr's performance on the drums. In the verses, he plays a fast tempo "surf" beat, but the ride cymbal stickwork is a latin jazz overlay. Incredible. The choruses are a straight 4 beat, which gives the song a schizophrenic propulsion. The song's apex is after the stop time middle solo where Starr starts up the song with a percussive flam using the snare over the bass drum. More incredible.

Trying to keep it short- Simple, infectious, sophisticated, optimistic, original. A 2:18 minute pop gem. Oh yeah - even today, the feedback opening is way cool. And Harrison's clear guitar, McCartney's "tuba" bass figures, Lennon's vocal joy...

Then go to "Gonna Send You Back to Walker" (the Animals) (1964). GSYBtW is a cynical up tempo blues, that was released as a single, but was not a public hit. Eric Burdon's vocal distain rides over Alan Price's prototype garage organ and Hilton Valentine's sparse, treble thin, guitar fills.

As much as the Beatles were feeling fine, the Animals are disappointed that their women can not remain faithful. Here in two songs, are the opposites of life, and the diversity that recorded sound provide us. The Animals continue with nearly a dozen more popular hits, but musical differences break the band apart in 1967. Reforming the Animals with new members, Eric Burdon, embraces the Psychedelic sound of the late 60's.

Bogus Slogan Poster #40 - Inside View

From the same first national tour as BS Poster #39, poster #40 promoted the Band's appearance before the mayhem of 1,350 college students at the infamous Darmouth University Annex. Experiencing individual freedom for the first time - old enough to convince others to get into mutual trouble - well, even Bogus Slogan was learning about life on the road.

| | | • • | | |

To get the Band on the road, Mason Kimmers (vocals, guitar), had found an old 1930"s big band touring bus. The mileage meter displayed 831,233.4. Everyone figured that this was, at least, the dial's second time around. Up on blocks, with shredded rubber for tires, a thick coast of dust through out the interior (a victim of too many Santa Ana winds); the prospects were not looking good until the band met mechanic deluxe Nicky "Va-Voom" Konopolis.

Also know as "Kono," he had wandered backstage after a local club gig, raving about minor 9ths against walking bass lines supporting the octatonic scale. Somebody started him with a beer and for the next 30 minutes he ruminated on music theory, comparing the turn of the century classical avant-garde with the middle Musique Concrète period.

When he finally glanced down at his empty beer bottle with a look of dismay, Kimmer, with omniscience from outer space, asked Kono if he knew how to fix a bus.

Bogus Slogan Poster #39 - Inside View

For New Year's Eve, Bogus Slogan always comes out to play. Even if vacations, legal proceedings, or grudges seem to prevent a possible performance, the group spends the cash to get the private jets to bring them to and fro.

When the new year turns, Bogus Slogan is rarely on stage. This tradition stems from the first new year's eve concert where drummer, Benjamin Owen's car broke down in Baker, California. The short story is that the helicopter pilot and his wife were invited to the after party at Jumbo's Clown Room. Also Tige, Bones, Cryst, Bot of the Drifting Disciples Motorcycle Club, San Pedro, CA were invited. Owen made the club about 12:20am. A new tradition.

In 2000, Bogus Slogan returned to the Sand Bar Pavilion, the original crime scene. BS on stage - 12:17am.

Bogus Slogan Poster #38 - Inside View

In the early days of Bogus Slogan, attention and interest in the band was hard to come by. Groups like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys... were what the record buying public knew. Not a bad thing, but if you are trying to make a fortune as a rock band, those guys are in the way.

BS guitarist, Robert Soelberg, was well known in industry circles for his production and engineering skills. And his foray into the world of performance Rock n' Roll, with Bogus Slogan was beloved in the local clubs and theaters of Southern California, but as a national or international presence, they were unknown. So to sell the group to concert promoters, 'Screamin' Benny Bob ("BB") Taylor, BS's first "manager," used Soelberg's name as "leader" of the Band on many of the promotions.

This week's poster, "Faith is Universal," is from the first national tour in support of the Band's first long player, "We Gotta Go!" The initial single, "Playing with the Kitty," was breaking big and the tour was being booked as the group was doing the first dates outside California.

Some times, violence is necessary to convert the uninitiated music lover into Bogus Slogan fans. Toshiro Mifune, actor swordsman extraordinaire, expresses this motivation superbly. 125 posters were printed for the Boulder, Colorado concert. Only three have been authenticated. If you live around Boulder, check your parent's closet. Make your own fortune.

Complete Waste of Fame (2004)

Since watercolors are not known for their precision, Complete Waste of Fame (2004) starts with the paper washed and rewashed in a shapeless multi-color frenzy. Layer one screens a packet of lines that will later be "hidden" but currently is set out to segmentize the background.

Layers two and three increase the number of graphic elements - from which an epic battle for style is released - bringing a chaotic fullness before the viewer. Slowly, some of the fame is being absorbed into the canvas backing.

Bogus Slogan Poster #37 - Inside View

Trying to get a successful music festival off the ground is guaranteed to stress the founders. South by Southwest and Lilith Fair are incredible success stories, but Snugglefest was a fully implemented disaster. Bogus Slogan, always looking for new revenue streams, hooked into Snugglefest from the beginning. Based on the original founder's promises, Bogus Slogan had fellow band friends, The Fragging Dolls and SpiffyKick sign up as headliners for the Friday and Saturday programs. Each cut their usual appearance fee by 60% to help get the show into profitability.

The disaster began to bloom when in August, a month before the festival, legal notice from the state of Virginia was received in the management offices of all three bands, indicating that the construction, entertainment, controlled beverages and public assembly permits that were applied for had been denied. The next day, a similar letter from the city arrived. When a Federal notice of Non-Compliance came, everyone thought the gig was dead.

Phone calls to the founders became a massive double talk conspiracy. Everyone was told that "adjustments" had been made and all the permits were issued. Calls to the various government agencies to confirm typically ended with the bureaucrat saying "We don't care." And then hanging up the phone.

Bogus Slogan never got to play the Hard Chine Tavern. Six hours after the festival's "start," the founders were located at Norfolk International Airport with first class tickets to Valparaiso, Chile. After serving 3 years for fraud, the promoters disappeared into the heart of Europe.

Bogus Slogan Poster #36 - Inside View

The Desoto Point Arena poster's back image of a relaxed afternoon, hanging out at the general store, displays some of our bad human habits: burnable fossil fuels, cigarettes, and processed sugar soda drinks. Maybe one should be more worried about the porch's foundation, the add-on stair steps and the exposed wire lighting. Today's building codes would strip mall this picture into oblivion. And hanging out (loitering) is no longer an option unless you have paid, in advance, for permission.

KoKo Cola Commodiities Syndicate (no relation to CocaCola, Inc.) organized and promoted this concert after learning of the Netherlands Constitutional Monarchy suggesting a branding program to provide for all its citizens their own service number.

This concert's admission fee was used as a symbolic message of protest. Since we the people are the government - we must protest against our own anonymous dehumanizing polices for making legislation for the authorization of the numbering of our citizens. Bogus Slogan is a 'for our profit' rock 'n' roll group, this symbolic protest fee paid for the new playroom in the Band's recording studio.

Because, Bogus Slogan only visits the South, they bring as much music as they can. And because their's is not a native sound, they hired Kentucky's "The Joyless Future" as support for the tour's Southern turn. The Vicksburg arena show was a sellout. The concert gross was sufficient to garner 4th spot in Billboard's "Boxscore" column. BS sends a thank you to all those who attended.

SysOps Notice 2006.07.01

Catch a wave and you're sitting on top of the world

With an earth, comprised of eternal humans, only a few cloning cells and DNA tweaks away, I can look at my mortality, and laugh at why I ever drove 50 miles (round trip for 17 weeks), to record, off of the television speaker, the SOUNDTRACK to the British TV program The Prisoner. No coughing was allowed. The show was originally broadcasted in the late 60's and I watched it with my nose nearly on the tv's glass screen. I actually played back the audio only tapes. During the silent sections, I tried to imagine the course of action. Thank goodness the series came out on laser disc.

The show is an iconic fable of a dis-associated individual being bent to society's control. Episode after episode found the main character foiling his controllers' plan, but also failing to escape his village jail. In the last two episode, No. 6, the Prisoner, does turn the tables on his captors with a hallucinatory contest of minds, where logic is ignored in favor of a Monty Python sketch. The psychedelic 60's on film.

In 1977 the show was replayed on cable tv. Limited cable, but no satellites, no internet, no napster, no bit torrent. The show was not on VHS or BETAMAX tapes. Since I did not have cable or a VCR, the weekly sojourn began.

The series always had a cult following, but that does not mean commercial sales. DVDs were unknown and many years away. Getting the show on laser disc greatly helped, but finding all the episodes was another adventure. The Prisoner DVDs are being re-released in an anniversary box set with background documentaries and alternative episodes.

Another fave, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is on the DVD horizon. There are two corporations that claim copyright ownership and are fighting over the distribution rights, but that will get resolved. It is only about money.

Listening to the Soundtrack CD of the music from the series - Jerry Goldsmith's Crime Jazz Space Age Pop - bongos, flutes, percussive organ riffs galore, trumpets!!!! With Robert Drasnin, Gerald Fried, Lalo Schifrin, Richard Shores composing episode scores from the Goldsmith's U.N.C.L.E. music template. Bring on the THRUSH villains. Open channel "D."

And the first season of The Wild Wild West with Michael Dunn as "Dr. Miguelito Quixote Loveless," the master arch villain, in elegant Black and White, is available.

Killing my television might have to wait a bit. Technology has restored the fun. I think I have time to return to my childhood.
